An important character in the Dragon Ball series is trying to start the series from scratch.
Chikashi Kubota, the animation director of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, wants to reboot the series, as reported by Sportskeeda. The animator recently stated at Japan Expo 2023 that he thinks the beloved franchise, which has helped popularize the anime medium in the West, should start from scratch. According to reports, Kubota even shared this wish with Norihiro Hayashida, the producer of the last three Dragon Ball movies. No official reports of Toei Animations being interested in restarting the series have been made at the time of writing.
Dragon Ball’s latest anime project is the previously mentioned Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, which transforms the traditional 2D animation of the series into fully computer-generated 3D. While the project was mostly well received, some fans were disappointed with the development in the art style. The Sportskeeda article alleges that the benefits of the reboot mean there’s an opportunity to improve the series’ animation quality. Kubota hinted that it could rearrange the franchise’s complex rules to appease new fans intimidated by multiple chapters, manga titles, and unclear continuity.
Restart Anime and Live-Action
Reboots are common in the animation industry, as many bankable properties have trusted fan bases but no more content to produce. A recent example is Studio Orange’s Trigun Stampede, which rediscovered the classic sci-fi series with full CGi animation. Urusei Yatsura also has its own remake in 2022, which has been well received by fans and critics alike. The Kinnikuman wrestling series is also expected to return at an undisclosed date. In addition, a lot of anime has been adapted into live-action. For example, Netflix is currently working on adapting Avatar: The Last Airbender and One Piece, the latter of which recently received a trailer.
The Dragon Ball series was created by Akira Toriyama, serialized by Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1984 and lasted until 1995. It was adapted into an anime in 1986 by Toei Animation and became one of the animation projects. most influential of all time. The image of Goku and his orange dog is synonymous with pop culture and also helped him become one of the most popular protagonists in showbiz. The original anime spawned many spinoffs, including the popular Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super sequel series. Another Toriyama project in the works is a video game adaptation of his Sand Land manga.
Dragon Ball Super is available to watch on Crunchyroll. Additionally, Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga can be read on the Viz Media website with a Shonen Jump Subscription.
