A few weeks ago, exciting news broke that the beloved 1998 live-action series “Great Teacher Onizuka” (GTO) is set to make a triumphant return in the form of a new film. The television special is titled “GTO Revival.”
This revival, featuring Takashi Sorimachi’s return to the iconic role of Onizuka after a 26-year hiatus, is scheduled to premiere in spring 2024.

While this announcement garnered widespread attention due to GTO’s enduring popularity and cultural significance, it also shed light on author Tohru Fujisawa’s frustrations over the matter. the current GTO manga treatment, “GTO: Paradise Lost,” by publisher Kodansha.

Mr. Fujisawa expressed his mixed feelings, saying: “I’m happy that GTO is being revived, but it’s disappointing to see how the manga’GTO: Paradise Lost’ is being handled, which is currently on hiatus after when suddenly removed from Kodansha’s Weekly Young. Magazine during its publication.
I feel confused that the live-action TV special takes priority over the manga. I find myself questioning the decisions of this company… Maybe another publisher could take over the copyright?”
