Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 01
葬送のフリーレン
Sōsō no Frieren 01
Summary/Summary of content:
The human hero Himmel, the human priest Heiter, the dwarf warrior Eisen and the elven sorceress Frieren arrive at the royal capital. Ten years ago, this group set out to defeat the Demon King and succeeded. After receiving the honor from the king, they attended a grand celebration. After nightfall, the epochal meteor shower occurs. Frieren said she will return for the next event in 50 years, taking them to a better location.
Time passes and Frieren returns to the capital to visit Himmel. She was surprised to see that he was a short, older man. She then went to see the statue erected in their honor. Eventually, she and the elder Himmel connect with the now old Bishop Heiter and the old dwarf Eisen. She tells them they have a week-long journey to get to the best spot to see the Epoch Times Meteor Shower.
When they finally arrived, Himmel expressed his gratitude for this reunion. They observe a meteor shower, after which Himmel dies. During the funeral, some people other than Frieren did not shed a single tear. For his part, Frieren lamented not knowing Himmel even though he had been with him for 10 years.
Twenty years after the funeral, Frieren visited old Heiter. He has a young orphan girl living with him named Fern. Heiter wants Frieren to take Fern as an apprentice, but Fern refuses, citing danger. So Heiter gave Frieren a book to translate. Since it would take 5-6 years, Frieren agreed to train the talented Fern.
Thinking/Evaluating
I'm currently up to speed on the manga source material, but honestly, I don't want to do a “how well was this adapted” thing like I usually do. So please forgive me for this. However, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 01 was a great way for me to relive the series in a whole new way.
Ending and beginning
Although the current manga seems to be more adventure oriented, but Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 01 is about a nearly immortal elf who must face the truth that human life is just vapor. For her, ten years could also be ten days. But for her companions, especially her friends, they were long years, even if there were moments of joy and joy. So when Frieren broke down, I felt it.
The same goes for Himmel's final adventure. I have NO idea why he lost about 2-3 feet in height. (Possibly a joke since in anime, elders are often portrayed as VERY short.) Speculation that the story's explanation is that the shadow dragon horn he kept for Frieren for 50 years made him was injured and caused him to age faster than Heiter.
At any rate, this first episode spans a period of seventy years. And if you count the ten years Frieren has been with the party, she has spent her entire human life knowing them, but not knowing them. So that's when Heiter asked Frieren to train Fern while also decoding the book. He wants to protect Fern. Five to six years is nothing to Frieren. Thus, when it ends, Fern will be a powerful magician.
Finally, I want to mention Madhouse. I recently finished the anime Record of Lodoss War OVA for his Back to the Vaults series. Madhouse made that OVA and to be honest, I wasn't impressed. However, the images and animations in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 01 quite good. Hopefully this will continue.
Final thoughts and conclusions
Final, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 01 is a powerful film, an emotional start to what I know is a really good fantasy story. However, I wish the official subtitles kept the honorifics. “Mister” is less than “-sama”. That said, I look forward to watching more and hope to finish this series before the next season/movie comes out.
