TOHO announced on Thursday that it is producing a live-action film adaptation of the children's novel series Fushigi Dagashiya Zenitendō by author Reiko Hiroshima and illustrator jyajya, with Yūki Amami (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler, Mary and The Witch's Flower) plays the mysterious shop owner Beniko. The movie will open on December 13.

Hideo Nakata (Ring, Dark Water) will direct the film and Reiko Yoshida (K-ON!, Violet Evergarden, Liz and the Blue Bird, The Heike Story) will write the script.
The novel series' story focuses on the mysterious candy and snack shop Zenitendō, which only lucky people can find. The shop owner is a woman named Beniko, and she can recommend the perfect candy for each person's troubles. However, things may not go as expected if people eat or use candy incorrectly. Beniko's sweets bring good or bad luck depending on the person receiving them.
The novel series debuted in May 2013 and is still ongoing. The franchise has more than 1.4 million copies in print. A stage play adaptation premiered in Tokyo in August 2023.
The novel series inspired the anime Eiga Fushigi Dagashiya Zenitendō, one of four segments in the new installment of the revived Toei Manga Matsuri compilation series. The compilation film opened in Japanese theaters in August 2020. The film was scheduled to open in Japanese theaters in April 2020, but was delayed due to the pandemic.
A television anime based on the novel premiered in September 2020 and began a new season in April 2022. A new series premiered with the anime's 85th overall episode on NHK Education in April 2020. 2023. Another new movie premiered on April 5 earlier this year.
