Lupine the 3rd: Part III 16
Lupine III Part 3 16
ルパン三世 – Part III Ep. 16
Summary/SPOILER Summary
Lupine and Jigen infiltrate a luxury ship to steal Eve's Apple. Zenigata and his ICPO are engaged to protect the golden apple, owned by obese teenage Prince Adam. Meanwhile, Fujiko works for Prince Adam as his tutor. As she moved on the apple, Zenigata stopped her and followed her to her room. When she revealed her true identity, Zenigata tried to arrest her, but she set things up so that Prince Adam would throw him out.
Meanwhile, Lupine organizes a pirate show to take advantage of the confusion to steal the apple. Prince Adam proposed to Fujiko but she refused. Lupine invites him to join the pirate program, then promises to give the apple to Fujiko. However, Zenigata stopped him, forcing Lupine to abandon the attempt.
After the ship arrives in New York City, Lupine disguises himself as a prince to check on Zenigata's safety on the apple. Zenigata's security is quite impressive, so Lupine decides to use the upcoming New York Marathon to his advantage. Elsewhere, Prince Adam wears a napkin and promises to do everything he can to make Fujiko marry him. Fujiko encourages him to enter the New York Marathon, promising him a kiss if he finishes.
On the day of the marathon, Lupine diverts the marathon route to go to the secret exhibit where the apple is. In the chaos, Lupine is able to use the security system against himself and steal the apple. Fujiko goes to get the apple from Lupine but discovers its mystical effect is to make people lose weight quickly. Jigen saw in the newspaper that Prince Adam won the marathon because he was so far behind, alone following the actual route.
Thinking/Evaluating
Lupine the 3rd: Part III 16 just a silly episode with not-so-funny humor. It starts off interestingly enough with the little shark submarines that Lupine and Jigen use to board the ship. I don't mind that Lupine saved Zenigata's life, because that's his character. But then Lupine somehow created an entire pirate show for the guests on the ship to enjoy. Okay, I'll roll my eyes and go with it.
Then we come to Fujiko, who is attached to Prince Adam. I don't believe for a second that she would turn down a proposal from an obese teenage boy (who wore eye shadow for some reason). She will become a princess and eventually a wealthy queen of a country. However, the story has her rejecting him because (if the official subtitles are to be believed), she doesn't like boys. As if that factor even matters when it comes to wealth.
Where things really fall apart is in the second half of the episode. Zenigata hinders Lupine on the train, so Lupine hijacks the New York Marathon to achieve his goal of stealing the apple? Ignoring the fact that the marathon has so many officials and police to keep it going, all the runners must be incredibly stupid. However, such was their nature that they crossed the river and climbed a large wall, just to reach the apple display.
They then run through the building like idiots so they can activate all of Zenigata's security stuff, including a laser that explodes trying to slaughter everyone (and goes missing), but he again chopped up what was needed for Lupine to steal the apple. Uh. I don't mind the jokes in the title Lupine IIIbut this is a bridge too far.
Final thoughts and conclusion
Let me end my review on Lupine the 3rd: Part III 16 with some final thoughts.
I never understood Fujiko's refusal to use disguises or aliases. In the first series, she did it once. But in her normal form, she takes a tutoring job under the name MINE Fujiko. How she was able to land these lucrative jobs with her history is something I will never understand. There is no Goemon in this episode.
Final, Lupine the 3rd: Part III 16 is an episode that starts out promising, but then abandons everything for stupid stupidity, thinking it's funny. Not so.
