Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun fans will be seeing their favorite ghost boy return this fall.
As detailed on Crunchyroll, After-School Hanako-Kun, Lerche’s first installment in the “Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun reboot project”, will air in Japan on October 12. The new series will include consisting of 10-minute episodes that aired over the course of four weeks. To celebrate the upcoming release, Aidalro, the creator of Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun, has revealed a new piece of commemorative artwork, alongside new character sketches by the main characters Hanako-kun. and Nene Yashiro in the series. Crunchyroll will begin airing the series on October 10 – two days before its initial airing.
Lerche announced a reboot of the Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun anime series in December 2022, accompanied by a brief animation video but no further details about the project. After-School Hanako-Kun is based on the spin-off of the main manga Hanako-Kun in Aidalro’s Toilet-Bound. Megumi Ogata, who plays both Hanako-Kun and Tsukasa, describes the manga as a more “optimistic” story about the main series, following Hanako-Kun and friends in their daily lives.
After-School Hanako-Kun has a different director and script team than its predecessor. Masaki Kitamura (Mobile Suit Tsuna 00, Tiger & Bunny) is directing the series at Lerche. Kazuma Nagatomo (Bakugan: Armored Alliance) is in charge of Compilation of the series. Aya Higami, (High Card, Scum’s Wish) takes on the role of Animation Director of the film. Hiroshi Takaki will return to compose the music for the series. Akari Kito, Megumi Obata, and Shoya Chiba will also take on the roles of Nene, Hanako-kun, and Kou Minamoto, respectively.
Aidalro’s Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun manga launched in Square Enix’s monthly G Fantasy Magazine in 2014. The story is a supernatural comedy set in the halls of Kamome Academy, a regular school Strange and inexplicable things happen. One day, a heartbroken student named Nene Yashiro overhears a rumor that if one visits the third stall of the women’s bath on the third floor, a female spirit named Hanako-Kun will appear and grant a wish. To Nene’s surprise, Hanako-Kun turns out to be real — and looks like a high school boy. However, when Nene tried to beg him to grant her wish, she accidentally fell under the curse of a powerful mermaid. To save herself, Nene agrees to bind herself to Hanako and start a new life as his assistant. Despite his constant teasing and joking, Nene eventually developed feelings for him and began to question the person he was before his death.
After-School Hanako-Kun will premiere on Crunchyroll on October 10. Aidalro’s original manga has an English version from Yen Press.
