Looking to capitalize on the revival of the anime mech genre it originally helped create, Cowboy bebopmanufactory of, dawnannounced the return of the cult classic series ZEGAPAIN.
As revealed on August 31, 2023, posted to the official ZEGAPAIN Project Reunion website, work has begun on a sequel series to the original ZEGAPAIN series that ran in 2006. The new show, titled Alto Moda, will follow a new force operating in the ZEGAPAIN universe. No further information regarding the story was announced in the post, nor were there any details regarding the release date or episode number.
The house Cowboy Bebop helped build
Sunrise Studio helped introduce anime to the world with Peter Gunn’s fun Cowboy Bebop. The iconic series, which has gone on to influence a generation of anime, television series and movies, has firmly established Sunrise as one of the leading animation studios in the world. It’s also helped make it the go-to studio for producing cutting-edge shows that challenge traditional anime stereotypes.
However, despite its pioneering reputation, Sunrise has been “tight” in producing mech anime and remains one of the most productive studios for the genre. It could be argued that without Sunrise and the Mobile Suit GTA series, the mech genre might never have become as popular as it is today. The decision to produce ZEGAPOINT – a mech anime with a creative twist that is completely in line with its culture, history and traditions.
ZEGAPAIN is a Mech anime with a twist
ZEGAPAIN follows the adventures of student Kyo Sogoru and his friend Ryoko Kaminagi as they deal with schoolwork, friends, and family. Kyo, an avid swimmer, one day meets a girl at the swimming pool he has never met before. Interested in her, he started a conversation and learned her name was Shizuno Misaka. However, when she jumped into the pool and never emerged again, Kyo began to wonder what was going on. He continues to meet Misaka at the pool and eventually befriends her. Soon, he learns that she is from another dimension.
Misaka tells Kyo that her dimension is in danger of being destroyed by aliens. After meeting and learning about Kyo, she believes that he has the ability to help her lead the mechanical army to defeat the aliens. Kyo reluctantly agrees to help Shizuno, and in the process draws Ryoko into the conspiracy. Thus begins a fantastical adventure between two worlds that ultimately causes Kyo to question his experiences and wonder which reality is the truth.
In addition to announcing the Alto Mode anime sequel, ZEGAPAIN Project Reunion also announced several side projects leading up to the new anime premiere. First, starting October 1, 2023 and airing every Sunday thereafter, the original 2006 anime ZEGAPAIN will be rebroadcast on Japan’s Tokyo MX station ZEGAPAIN ADP, the 2016 anime serves as a prequel to the anime that will also be re-released. Indeed, it looks like a studio dawn is pulling all the stops to make sure that the new one ZEGAPAIN The series was a resounding success.
