Undead Unluck released its first episode on Friday and promises to show us an exciting new anime from Fire Force studio David Production. The episode opens with a random couple stranded in the middle of nowhere. The scene along with the background music gave me a melancholy feeling, as if one or both people would die. Their scene is cut to a separate shot of a little girl watching the plane depart, which is when I got my sad expectations after the plane exploded (as this couple is revealed Highway is a fictional story, read by older people). little girl). Here are some reasons why I think this will be one of my favorites this season.
Undead Unluck anime premiere
The main characters
We are introduced to the main characters right after the first scene. Fuko Izumo, a girl who is ready to die after completing her favorite manga (inspired by the real-life Kimi ni Todoke: From Me, To You), and Andy, a boy who wants to seek death. Fuko is clearly not ready to die, but she wants to do it to avoid causing misfortune to others. However, Andy is Undead and he wants to touch her after she says it will cause a deadly disease. He is unaffected by a knife wound or a train destroying his body and can easily regenerate.
Although Fuko is a typical kind girl who doesn’t want to cause misfortune to others, she tragically cannot avoid it. it’s because of her abilities. She has an interesting character and while not exactly groundbreaking, I think her character is unique enough to be entertaining. Andy, on the other hand, found himself much more curious. He is straightforward and has no qualms about going after Fuko, but it proves to be more than just some fan-inserted ecchi. He has an extremely quick intelligence and immediately recognizes several rules and offers possibilities about Fuko’s abilities. His past after living for an unknown length of time may be the key, and the possible power increase from removing the ‘cork’ from his brain is also a mystery.
Possibilities
Although not much is revealed, we learn from the villain that Fuko and Andy are called the Negatives, and they’cause trouble in the world’along with some thing called UMA. If Undead and Unluck mean both negating death and luck, then I’m curious to see what else exists and how the battles will play out in this anime. Coming from the studio behind Fire Force and all their wacky abilities, UNDEAD UNLUCK has a lot of potential for them to show off!
The Animation
Continuing from the last point, I thought the animation in the first episode of Undead Unluck was really good, right from the opening sequence to the ending with the meteor. Andy’s rebirth looks great, as do the action scenes. The fact that he left after removing the cork was especially satisfying. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of his abilities and how he can use his immortality.
The Comedy
The comedic aspect of this story works really well and the animation seems to adapt to it appropriately. Andy isn’t joking or teasing when he says things like telling Fuko to take off her clothes, which makes her reactions more natural and actually funny. He’s so old that it doesn’t even occur to him that she finds that unacceptable, even though she obviously ran away. His conclusion after learning about how the kiss that causes the greatest misfortune is actually logically capable of causing even greater misfortune, but its humorous delivery is perfect. Also, the unlucky banana crates fall so randomly that it’s funny and there are certainly many other reasons.
Voice acting
While Fuko’s voice actor Moe Kahara is just starting out in the industry (second lead role after Akari in The Executioner and Her Way of Life), Andy is voiced by the instantly recognizable Yuichi Nakamura. ie. He has many notable roles, although some of the most relevant today are probably Satoru Gojo in JUJUTSU KAISEN, Hawks in My Hero AcadeKaren, and Kuro Tetsuro in Haikyu!! Although recognizable, he brings something new to this vocal range and the performance seems to suit Andy. The anime’s credits include many bigger names like Natsuki Hanae, Mariya Ise, Rie Kugimiya, Nobuhiko Okamoto, Tomokazu Sugita, Rikya Koyama, and Aoi Yuki, so I’m looking forward to meeting their characters.
Without getting too deep into it, I found the Undead Unluck premiere really enjoyable and can’t wait to see more of Andy and Fuko! If you liked the first episode too, don’t forget to vote for it in our weekly poll!
