Sunao Katabuchi unveiled the pilot for his upcoming anime series, “The Mourning Children: Nagiko and the Girls Wear Tsurubami Black (Tsurubami-Iro no Nagiko-tachi),” at the International Manga and Anime Fair Kyoto last weekend.
Yūji Kaneko, best known for “Ranking the Kings,” “Little Witch AcadeKaren,” and “Kill la Kill,” has now assumed the role of art director, replacing Toshiharu Mizutani, who previously served as art director. was credited in previous previews of the film.

Katabuchi’s journey with this project began in 2017 and its story takes place in 10th century Kyoto, coinciding with the period in which the literary masterpiece “The Pillow Book” was composed by the historical figure Sei Shōnagon.
In the film’s preview, it was hinted that the plot would revolve around an epidemic, with Sei Shōnagon as a prominent character, along with others named Koretada, Tokinaka, Chikatada and Takaie.
Katabuchi holds credit for the original concept and is also the film’s scriptwriter and director. Chie Uratani, known for his work on “Hijikata Toshizo: Hiro no Kiseki,” “Princess Arete” and “Ushiro no Shōmen Daare,” serves as assistant director (called co-director in experimental films). , while Masashi Ando, praised for “The Deer King” and “Princess Mononoke,” serves as animation director.
Akira Senju, celebrated for his work on “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” and “Mobile Suit Victory,” is responsible for composing the film’s music.
