The Imaginary is based on a children’s novel by AF Harrold. Originally published in 2015, the novel is about the girl Amanda and her imaginary friend. Bloomsbury published the book with illustrations by Emily Gravett and described the plot as follows:
Rudger is Amanda’s best friend. He doesn’t exist, but no one is perfect.
Only Amanda could see her imaginary friend – until the evil Mr Bunting arrived at Amanda’s doorstep. Mr. Bunting hunts fantasies. Rumors say he ate them. And he sniffed Rudger. Soon, Rudger was alone and running after his imaginary life. But can a boy who isn’t there survive without friends to feed his dreams?
