CBR Anime Week brought to you by HULU ANIMAYHEM
Last year, CloverWorks (Spy x Family, Fate/Grand Order) revealed a short trailer for its upcoming fantasy-drama anime, Fureru. Now, the popular animation studio has released the official full trailer, along with new plot details, for the upcoming film.
Released in December 2023, CloverWorks' first trailer introduced the film's protagonist – a cute hedgehog-like animal that has a mysterious connection to the film's main characters. Aniplex, which is producing the film along with Story Inc. (Weathering With You), recently released a new trailer for Fureru on its official YouTube channel, introducing the three main stars on screen for the first time. According to Fureru's official website, the film's story revolves around “childhood friends who grew up on the same island [in] Takadanobata Tokyo.” Over 20 years later, the trio stumbles upon the mysterious Fureru, whom they first met as children. Through the power of telepathy, the creature allows them to hear each other’s “inner voices,” allowing their friendship to stand the test of time.

CloverWorks' upcoming Fureru features the same staff as the emotional Anohana
Unlike many of CloverWorks' previous works, Fureru is not based on any pre-existing properties. The film's concept was developed by “Super Peace Busters,” the creative team behind A-1 Pictures' popular supernatural romance anime Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. Tatsuyuki Nagai, who directed both Anohana and A Certain Scientific Railgun, is also directing Fureru. Meanwhile, Anohana screenwriter Mari Okada is penning the film's script, while Anohana artist Masayoshi Tanaka reprises his dual role as chief animation director and character designer. YOASOBI, a popular J-pop artist who performed the theme songs for Oshi no Ko and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, is performing Fureru's main theme song, “Monotone.”
Fureru will be a worthy successor to the Anime Hit Spy x Family
Based on the content of Fureru's trailer, Nagai and Okada's story seems to be a realistic tale of love, loyalty, and friendship, making it a fitting creative successor to Spy x Family. Based on Tatsuya Endo's comedy manga of the same name, Spy x Family explores the unique bond between a work-obsessed spy, a dangerous assassin, and a young girl with psychic abilities. While the series focuses on comedy for the most part, the story incorporates dramatic elements at times, such as the beloved “Cruise Adventure” arc. CloverWorks, which produced the hit anime adaptation in collaboration with Wit Studio (Attack on Titan), ended the series' second season in December 2023. Spy xFamily's animation team recently confirmed the future release of Season 3 with a special teaser image featuring Anya and her dog, Bond.
