Warning: Spoiler for Dandadan chapter 99 A well-built situation in Shonen Jump+’s Taste could be one of the manga’s most powerful moments if it didn’t waste on the worst kind of character.
A spoiled child named Sakata, who is clearly presented in the most unattractive way possible, faces rejection from those who recently confirmed his existence for the first time in Dandadan chapter 99. by mangaka Yukinobu Tatsu, translator Kumar Sivasubramanian and letter writer Kyla Aiko. Meanwhile, the boy continues to be ignored by the usual perpetrators.
Dandadan wastes a powerful story about the rejection of a stock pervert
Ever since he was unwittingly caught up in the supernatural chaos surrounding the hero Okarun and his friends, Sakata’s entire hoax has led Dandadan to a problematic hoax whereby he he relentlessly hit the girls in Okarun’s group and made weird, unsettling poses. Much of the chapters in his intro involve him misinterpreting the discussions between Okarun and Momo as obvious, exploiting his lecherous personality by repeatedly making disingenuous remarks. fit to match. Unfortunately, he’s become important to the plot lately as he’s the only one of Okarun’s team who was able to successfully control Momo Ayase’s house to fight one of the Dandadan’s new kaiju enemy.
But now Dandadan tries to humanize Sakata by describing his status as a social outcast. It has been shown that he has gone to great lengths to gain the approval of Okarun and his friends in an attempt to change his appearance to impress them. But Sakata’s decision to give up charades when he realizes they’re not at school shows he doesn’t feel the need to try to make a positive impression on anyone else. Sakata’s isolation is further demonstrated by his failed attempts to locate each of his friends and then the realization that they have purposefully gone to save the world without him, instead of all of them being casually absent, emphasizing his worst fear that the people he wants approval from most don’t value him enough.
The chapter also demonstrates that not only is he a nerd without some valuable qualities like academic prowess, but he also suffers from the typical defect of outcasts: playing sports poor sports. The irony is that he understands the strategy but cannot physically execute it, a skill that would be useful and earn him respect if he had the courage to share them. This chapter even gives him false hope when he misinterprets an apparently Okarun message for him.
It’s unfortunate that all these interesting concepts are wasted on such an unpleasant and problematic character as Sakata. It’s obvious he’s suffering and hurting, but it’s hard to care considering his unwarranted metamorphosis and general quirks. It would be much more effective if Dandadan tried to use difficulty to make an already likable character more likable instead of trying and failing to make an unlikable character like Sakata less powerful. Of course, this chapter of Taste still well done and amazingly moving, but it seems like the potential is squandered, especially considering how Dance Shonen+ readers would feel if another character experienced this debilitating rejection.
