The Pokémon anime can sometimes almost predict game features—one episode featuring ancient Jigglypuff and one such “Paradox” Pokémon now exist in Pokémon Scarlet. However, it’s much less common for an anime character to predict the future – and for Misty, her vision not only predicts the future of the franchise, but her own.
In the Johto era episode “Enlighten Up!” Ash and friends visit a temple dedicated to Slowpoke and are encouraged to meditate. Not surprisingly, young and energetic Ash struggled with meditation, seeing himself as the champion of the Johto League (which sadly did not materialize). Brock only sees the girl at the temple, but Misty finds herself at a beach, watching a “legendary water Pokémon” with giant thorny fins on its back rush to the surface and swim away. All three are berated by the monks for letting their minds wander, but Misty’s vision may not be quite as erroneous as it appears.
Misty’s mysterious “legendary” Pokémon could be Mega Gyarados
When one thinks about Legendary Pokémon specifically, there isn’t anything that really matches what Misty sees. However, there is another rare and powerful Pokémon that can easily be mistaken for a Legend: Mega Gyarados. As Gyarados Mega Evolves, it has large, sail-like fins on its back, and its body becomes more clustered, giving it a more similar appearance to the Pokémon in Misty’s field of vision. However, the episode first aired in Japan in 2002, more than a decade before Mega Evolution was introduced in X and Y. Maybe this is a coincidence or the filmmakers Animation has been allowed to use some unfinished or rejected Pokémon designs here. was eventually remade as Mega Gyarados. Still, it’s interesting that they chose that over peeking at Kyogre, as the Ruby and Sapphire versions are only a few months away from release when this airs.
Misty’s Mega Gyarados prophecy makes her a deeper character
As it turns out, however, this vision is a lot more personal to Misty. Misty has always been afraid of Gyarados, a fear she has to conquer in an episode of The Pokémon Chronicles, which ends with her catching a Gyarados. Misty still had that Gyarados when she reappeared in the Sun and Moon era of the anime, and (in the time since) managed to get the Key Stone and the Super Stone for Gyarados of the Pokémon, allowing her to Mega Evolve the next time she sees Ash. Although neither she nor the writers were aware of this at the time, that “Legendary Water-type Pokémon” really set the stage for her.
While she never recreates the exact scene, it looks like Misty may have actually glimpsed her own future—a future where Gyarados isn’t so scary anymore, and where she is. much more similar to the Water system. Pokémon The owner of her dreams.
