Lupine the 3rd: Part III Review
Lupine III Part 3 Review
ルパン三世 – Part III
I am a fan of Lupine III ever since I watched Lupine III: Castle of Cagliostro raw in 1989 or 1990. Since then, I've made it a point to watch more anime titles Lupine III as possible. (The first manga never impressed me.) When I finished watching the first TV series “Green Jacket,” a blog reader convinced me to switch to Lupine the 3rd: Part III because I rewatched the first few seasons. episodes. I agreed.

Lots of stupid stupidity
When I looked through the reviews of the episode Lupine the 3rd: Part IIII keep seeing recurring complaints. A lot of the episodes are just silly. Others are surprisingly stupid. Still others are of no use as they wander around filling the time. What makes this worse is that many times, the episodes have very interesting ideas. Unfortunately, the writers were either too incompetent to know what to do, or felt the need to make things silly “for the kids.”
For example, episode 31 has a really interesting concept scene. Lupin's gang will trick a rich man into buying stolen art and then rob him blind. Fujiko becomes close to the man so her charm takes effect. But in the meantime, this guy plays Fujiko, thus hindering Lupine. That's a pretty good start. However, the writers then made the guy crazy stupid so Lupine's gang could cut the man's treasure room out of his mansion and literally haul it away black. Please give me a break.
Another example is episode 27 and episode 28, which is an unofficial 2-part story. There's a contrived plot device with the character of Barbara, who Jigen gets lost in a love triangle with another man. There's an interesting concept here with the Soviet Union shooting down a plane and Fujiko working with the CIA. Unfortunately, even if it were a fabrication, I wouldn't mind the romantic story created by the girl Jigen in the past.
But in the second part, the screenwriter didn't know what to do so it took a lot of time. wasted on actions and boring things. And since Lupine can “magically” get himself out of any situation, there are no stakes either. Honestly, that's a shame.
An outstanding episode
Between all the “okay” to mediocre to trashy episodes that make up Lupine the Part 3: Part IIIhas an outstanding story. In episode 30, Lupine runs a pub in a fairly large city. A woman walked into a bar. Lupine plays the bartender perfectly, eventually getting her to open up more. Their conversation should have been boring, but it wasn't. I really like the dynamic between Lupine and Sara.
Here, however, the screenwriters have no end in sight. Lupine's entire plan revolves around countless plot coincidences. And that includes Lupine running a tavern only for this woman to walk in and officially invite him on his mission. But since the rest of the episode was really good, I skipped it.
I think this episode stands out because it was actually adapted from chapter 2 of the short-lived series sexy Lupine III comic. And yes, there are some plot differences, but the anime takes them to the next level. But like I said, I overlooked those things because this episode really impressed me.
Change the art style
While character designs can change over the course of an anime series, it is much more noticeable in Lupine the 3rd: Part III. Characters have slightly wider faces at the start.
Then they move on to a few episodes. That change continues throughout the series. After Lupine and his friend had narrow faces, Lupine's chin frequently changed.
I think Fujiko had it the worst. Sometimes her character design sucks, even when the other characters suck. I didn't study the factors of production, but I guess different groups did different things.
