Kaiju No 8 Episode 2 Review: Protecting the Weak
Today's episode is even better than the first because we finally get more information and meet new characters. I'll start by saying that the opening song isn't bad, but the visuals are definitely not my thing. I prefer a more traditional anime opening with scenes from the movie itself. Additionally, we pick up right where our main character, Kafka, transforms into a Kaiju.
This is clearly the worst situation one could face, as Kafka turns into a monster in a hospital where there are tons of witnesses. He is captured by an old man, who almost dies after seeing Kafka's appearance and smile, which Kafka tries to appear innocent.
In this episode, we see how Kafka finds a way out of this very messy situation with his trusted junior, Ishikawa, helping him sort it out. Not only that, Kafka also found many interesting characteristics about himself in Kaiju form. With this new body, he gained tremendous strength, with which he was able to tear down the entire wall of the hospital room with a single touch. Additionally, he has keen senses that can easily detect a Kaiju of its type.
Kafka tries to flee from the entire fiasco before the Self-Defense Forces can arrive and destroy him, but when he realizes that there is another Kaiju nearby, he remembers his original goal. I'm protecting innocent people from Kaiju. This desire causes him to go in another direction, where he will face another threat.
Throughout this episode, we see Kafka recast himself as a hero by deciding to join the defense force even in his state of turning into a kaiju without any warning at any time. He realizes that ultimately, he wishes to help people and stand with Mina as an equal. So even when he has to ensure his own safety, he still tries to protect humans, something he has dreamed of since his teenage days.
The music of this series is really good, like the BGM you hear when watching Kafka get serious is great. Even the introduction of other new characters keeps you excited for what's to come.
