Summary
Goku has the option to undergo the Potential Unleashing ceremony before the Tournament of Power. Gohan and Piccolo have both previously unleashed their hidden potential in similar ways. Unleashing his potential could help Goku surpass even his true Ultra Instinct and stand a chance against powerful enemies like Black Frieza.
It seems like Goku has reached its peak in Super Dragon Ball, but there’s actually still at least one power-up option still on the table, thanks to the tight time before the Tournament of Power. That power-up was, of course, the Unleashing Potential ceremony.
In the original Dragon Ball Z, Gohan undergoes a lengthy ritual with Elder Kai to unleash his hidden potential, allowing him to go far beyond his limits. This leads to Gohan developing his Ultimate form, a transformation so powerful that he rarely even uses Super Saiyan anymore.
Gohan’s Ultimate Form eventually evolved into the Gohan Beast form seen in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (and corresponding manga chapters), demonstrating that the Unleashed Potential state has the power to evolve furthermore. Piccolo can also use this in the movie, but Goku has never used this option – even though he was once given the opportunity.
Goku can still reach his potential
In episode #91 of Dragon Ball Super, right before the start of the Tournament of Power, Goku is thinking about how to train in preparation when he learns that Vegeta is in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. The Elder Kai offers to perform the same ritual as he did on Gohan, but Shin stops him, saying that the ritual took longer than they did before starting the Tournament of Power. Perhaps surprisingly, Goku seems very interested in the idea, but has yet to accept the offer since the Tournament of Power ended. It’s possible that without the pressure of the Tournament, Goku feels he’s better off training the old way, but it’s still an option nonetheless.
It’s possible that unleashing his potential will allow Goku to surpass even his true Ultra Instinct, the most powerful transformation he currently has access to, if Gohan is any indication. He may even discover a complete transformation unique to him, like Gohan and Piccolo did. Given Goku’s encounter with Black Frieza in the Dragon Ball Super manga, he would need an even greater power than Ultra Instinct to stand a chance, and unleashing his potential could very well achieve that. there. Historically, Goku is not a fan of these types of rituals, but he has experienced them before (such as the supernatural water) and can be convinced to do it again under the right circumstances .
Introducing the concept of Unleashed Potential to Goku was a bit difficult, as this form was created specifically to set Gohan apart from his father. On the other hand, after the concept of Piccolo returned in the Superhero saga, it would make sense for Goku to reconsider the idea of going through the process himself. It would also tie the Superhero content more closely to what was going on in Superheroes before that arc started. While the idea of Goku undergoing Unleashed Potential will always be an option, Goku is the type of person who likes to do things the hard way, and Super Dragon Ball it might be better that way.
