Not too far off in the episode, Nezuko is trying to get Tanjiro’s attention as Tanjiro worries about the impending sunrise. Nezuko points out that the demon still chases humans despite having no head, leaving Tanjiro in a predicament. Nezuko finally made the decision for him, kicking him towards the demon as the Sun seemed to burn her…except that after a short time of being burned, everything was fine. In fact, Nezuko is more human than ever, even having the ability to talk for the first time since becoming a demon.
Nezuko’s immunity to sunlight changes everything
The most important thing that Muzan has achieved all this time is to create a demon that can withstand sunlight. He has pursued many paths on this front, such as Blue Spider Lily, which originally turned him into a demon, and one of the reasons he created demons was simply to see if they have mutations that allow them to withstand sunlight. While Tanjiro and friends are overjoyed to see Nezuko alive and better than ever, they are not the only ones receiving the news. With Nezuko in possession of what Muzan wanted most, she would become his next target, and he would do anything to get her.
There are implications of this in addition to those related to Muzan. Nezuko still seems to possess her demonic powers, so it’s not like she’s completely turned back into the person Tanjiro wanted. Still, having Nezuko be able to speak is quite a change, and gives her the opportunity to eventually develop the character. It’s not yet clear if she’ll be able to speak fully verbally again, but it looks like a bit of practice will be enough to get her there if she doesn’t. It will also be interesting to see how much she remembers about her time as a demon and her life before. On the smaller side, this also means that Tanjiro doesn’t have to carry that box around anymore.
It’s clear that this revelation will shape the story going forward. While up until now the goal had been to find a way to bring Nezuko back to life, that has now turned to having to protect her from Muzan. The threat he poses if he gains her resistance to sunlight is immeasurable, which also means this from Tanjiro’s problem to the entire Legion’s problem. Demon Slayer. While there are still many questions to be answered here, demon slayer certainly elevates the status quo, and that’s a good thing overall.
