The anime is based on the soccer manga series written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. The manga began serialization in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine on August 1, 2018, and has released 30 tankobon volumes as of August 2024, with the 31st volume to be released on October 17, 2024. Kodansha USA publishes the manga in English for North America.
The series also inspired a spin-off manga titled Blue Lock-Episode Nagi-, written by Kaneshiro and drawn by Kota Sannomiya. The spin-off was adapted into a 2024 anime film that Crunchyroll streamed in North America.
