A Yuri!!! on Ice fan Mika (@/_mika60_) edited the side-by-side comparison of the original “History Maker” opening with the opening of the annual Fantasy on Ice skate chapter, sung live by Dean Fujioka, where There were many skaters, including American figure skater Johnny Weir and double Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu performing.
Yuuri!!! on Ice Fan was born to make history
Mika wrote, “I feel emotional editing this!” a sentiment deeply felt by many of Yuri’s colleagues!!! on Ice and Yuzuru Hanyu fans for a number of reasons. Saw some music from Yuri!!! on Ice performed in real life by figure skaters will always be one of the best things fans can see and to see it performed on such a big stage with so much fun. Many talented figure skaters, with a focus on real-life legend Yuzuru Hanyu brought many to tears. One commented, “This isn’t real, I’m crying so much,” and another cheered, “YES WE ARE BEEN BIRTH TO MAKE HISTORY.”
This special episode was a particularly emotional one for Johnny Weir as the three-time National Champion and two-time Olympic athlete announced his retirement from performing. Because Weir is a famous Yuri!!! For Ice fans, it’s fitting that “History Maker” be performed for his final performance. In his Instagram post where he wears a flower crown, a Yuri!!! on Ice pays homage to, Weir writes, “I never dreamed that in a million years I would be the kind of person who would have the kind of farewell I did yesterday. […] I felt like the champion I wanted to be and the moment of glory came for me.” He ended the letter thanking all those who supported and loved him: “You guys make me feel like a champion of something much more precious than gold, but of the heart. Thank.”
“History Maker” along with the rest of Yuri!!! on Ice’s soundtrack has received critical acclaim. The opening theme song won Best Opening at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, IGN Awards, AnimeLand Grand Prix and Anime Grand Prix. When it aired, Yuri!!! on Ice, indeed, made history as one of the first anime that didn’t advertise as BL for same-sex relationships.
