1. WHAT IS DEBUT?
Debut is defined as the first media debut/appearance of an artist or group of artists, introducing themselves, often appearing on a separate showcase.
In Kpop, debut is when a group of trainees from a certain company (or a reality show) release their first official song. This song is often accompanied by a showcase, as well as appearing on music broadcasts.
For example: BTS debuted in 2013 with the debut song “No More Dream” on their Showcase (on April 13, 2013).

2.1. Pre-audition training
It all starts with training! The level of competition is very high, the trainees practice a lot since they were young. Besides talent, they also have to practice hard and it may take a few auditions to be accepted by a company as a trainee.
If they are luckier, they can become trainees through street casting without having to attend an audition.
2.2. Audition
If they are unlucky with street casting, they may only have to attend an audition to become an idol. Participating in more than 30 auditions is normal in Korea.
2.3. Contract
After passing the audition, they are signed to a trainee contract – lasting about 2 to 4 years. This does not guarantee a debut, it is simply a contract accepting an individual into the company’s training regimen.
These contracts are how rookie teams like SM Rookies or JYP Trainees are formed.
2.4. Rigorous training
Trainees undergo rigorous training in singing, dancing, acting, languages and more while competing with each other for attention.
Only a small number pass and receive an artist contract. Some trainees have to go through years of training to have the opportunity to debut.
2.5. Dropout
Many trainees choose to drop out, because their practice time can be up to 15 hours a day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
For those interns who don’t drop out, they often study at home or spend very little time on the couch.
2.6. Add “homework”
Exercise, prescribed meals and standard weight will help them have a star “body”.
Media training, sex education and etiquette lessons are also provided regularly.
2.7. Recognize low chances
Despite rigorous training, only a small percentage of students are actually able to join groups and debut. Companies will choose their favorite interns or interns who fit into the next group they want to launch.
2.8. Debut
Although debuting is an achievement after years of preparation, in reality it is just another level of competition.
With a lot of groups, idols have to work harder to make their group known and recognized, otherwise they may have to go through retraining and re-debut programs like Produce 101, MIX NINE or The Unit.
2.9. Gain fame
Successful groups will experience fame with marketing deals, movies, mansions, and more luxuries that come with a K-pop career.
They will play concerts, tour, meet fans and learn how to produce, write and expand their creativity in their work.
