Toho announced that it has made a strategic investment in CoMix Wave Films by purchasing 45 shares or an equivalent 6.09% stake in the company. This announcement follows yesterday's acquisition of GKIDS and the acquisition of Science SARU in May this year.
According to a recent disclosure from Toho, this investment will allow the company to contribute to improving the production environment and expanding creative opportunities at CoMix Wave Films. They also aim to further develop their animation business by bringing the animation studio's productions to the world.
Since the theatrical release of The Garden of Words in 2013, Toho has participated in the production and distribution of a number of works produced by CoMix Wave Films. Other films that have been distributed by Toho from the studio include Your Name (2016), Weathering With You (2019) and Suzume (2022).
Toho's wave of acquisitions is part of its plan to increase the planning and development of compelling content and creative IP, while expanding its business overseas. This is based on the company's corporate strategy called TOHO VISION 2032. The company has identified four main focus areas as its development strategy: Planning & Intellectual Property, Animation, Engineering number and Overseas.
CoMix Wave Films is an animation studio founded in 2007 after separating from CoMix Wave Inc. This studio is famous for its work on Makoto Shinkai's projects.
