Nigel Ng (Uncle Roger) posted an update that the recent copyright strike from Toei Animation has officially been withdrawn for his ONE PIECE video. The update was made on September 5, the day the video titled “Uncle Roger Review ONE PIECE Curry Curry” was scheduled to be removed. Video reviews are now allowed on the platform and currently have around 2.3 million views.
Nigel Ng also posted the same update above Twitter and thanked the YouTube team, who responded with a friendly thank you. No additional information was released regarding the copyright strike from Toei. However, Nigel Ng jokingly mentioned that the decision was definitely related to MSG, one of the jokes in his Uncle Roger video. In addition to ONE PIECE, Nigel Ng/Uncle Roger has also previously done a cooking review video for Shokugeki no Soma: Food Wars !

This is not the first example of Toei’s YouTube anime copyright claim. YouTuber Mark Fitzpatrick of Totally Not Mark and TeamFourStar, the team behind Dragon Ball Z Abridged have received copyright complaints from Toei in the past. In a similar situation, Suede’s Pokémon Journey series received a copyright strike when Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions (Sho-Pro) filed a court complaint against their channel. There is no concept of fair use in Japanese law, which generally covers reviews in the West.
ONE PIECE is a manga by Eichiro Oda about Monkey D. Luffy on his journey to find the Pirate King’s greatest treasure. Read for free on MANGA Plus while the anime is available to stream on Crunchyroll and Bilibili. Finally, all episodes of the live-action version are now available on Netflix and the script for season 2 is ready!
