The anime once again spills over into the real world, this time with references to Bleach in an ongoing trial involving influential American rapper Young Thug.
In opening statements in Young Thug YSL RICO Trial – “State of Georgia v. Jeffery Williams et al.” — defense attorney Angela D’Williams made a strange reference to the “Bount” arc of the anime Bleach. While the anime mostly faithfully adapts the original manga’s source material, supplements are often included to allow the source material to progress further. As D’Williams makes clear in the video below, this subplot means that the characters introduced in that arc — the Bounts — are barely mentioned again in the main story. She used this analogy to emphasize that her client, Rodalius Ryan, aka Lil Rod, was not involved in the ongoing RICO ‘story’.

Naturally, the clip went viral, leaving many people stunned by the mention in the official trial. It is unclear at this time whether the analogy will resonate with the jury, who are not expected to reach a decision until 2024. In CBR’s list of all the Bleach anime extras, the second part of the “Bount” arc – The Bount Assault On Soul Society arc – is marked as one of the least interesting storylines. The Bleach anime is famous for its huge amount of filler, reaching a whopping 163 episodes out of 366 (45%). This is not unusual for long-running anime series, with Naruto (41%) being another example. Anime also often significantly slow down the pace of the show to avoid filler content, although this often causes the viewing experience to be affected. One Piece is especially notorious for this, with only 10% of the show being filler but in a series that is often criticized for being extremely slow burning.
