TOHO has revealed that the anime film The Rose Of Versailles will premiere in Japan on January 31, 2025 JST.
Character images of Oscar François de Jarjayes, Marie Antoinette, André Grandier and Hans Axel von Fersen were also released.
The Rose Of Versailles movie is the latest anime project inspired by Riyoko Ikeda's manga. The manga previously inspired an anime series from 1979 to 1980 and a 1990 anime film (titled The Rose of Versailles: I'll Love You As Long As I Live) directed by Tokyo Movie Shinsha production (now TMS Entertainment). The synopsis of the new film reads:
Oscar François de Jarjayes, raised as a “son” and heir to a general's family, dresses as a beautiful woman in men's clothing. Marie Antoinette came from neighboring Austria as a bride to become a noble and graceful queen. Oscar's servant and childhood friend, commoner André Grandier. Hans Axel von Fersen, a handsome and intelligent count from Sweden. They met in Versailles, France at the end of the prosperous 18th century and lived their own destiny beautifully while being swept away by the flow of time.
Ikeda's manga ran from 1972 to 1973 in Shueisha's Margaret magazine and was first published under the Margaret Comics label in 10 tankoubon volumes. Udon Entertainment published the title in English.
The Rose Of Versailles also inspired a 1979 live-action film titled Lady Oscar, a Takarazuka Revue Company musical, sequels and spin-offs. A pilot for a new anime film was shown at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2007.
