In the early 2010s, anime fans enjoyed the Baka and Test-Summon the Beasts anime series while Kenji Inoue's original novel series was still in progress. The anime series and its sequel were relatively well received but a third series hasn't been seen in over a decade.

Later, another story by the author, the manga Grand Blue Dreaming, was adapted into its first anime in 2018 and also became popular. Six years later, a sequel to Grand Blue Dreaming is finally in production — but Inoue took to social media to dismiss any questions about a Baka and Test-Summon the Beasts sequel before the question was even asked .

Inoue commented on the Grand Blue Dreaming season 2 news in a series of posts on his X (formerly Twitter) on September 29. In his first post, the author wondered why after six year, a new anime season is made.
というわけで、6年越しにぐらんぶる第二期が決定しました!

So, after six years, Grand Blue season 2 has been announced!
Why now?
Inoue later downplayed any hopes of a Baka and Test-Summon the Beasts sequel:
ちなみに先に言っておきます!

By the way, I will say it first!
There will be no sequel to Baka and Test!!
The Grand Blue sequel is a miracle in itself!
The production team for the second part of Grand Blue Dreaming has not yet announced a release date.
