The first annual HizashiCon has been announced for November 8 and 9 at First United Methodist Church – 6 E Wright St, Pensacola, Florida, celebrating all things anime and Japanese culture. The Japanese-American Society of Northwest Florida hosted the event as part of the larger 11th annual Foo Foo Festival, a cultural celebration in Pensacola that runs from October 31 to November 11. HizashiCon will host cosplay competitions, Japanese pop music performances, educational exhibitions and workshops led by local scholars that “will deepen attendees' understanding of Japanese culture.” .” The convention will also feature a Shinjuku-inspired maid cafe, as well as fan discussions with guests including media personalities and voice actors. The HizashiCon website adds the origin of its name. Hizashi (日差し) comes from the Japanese word for sunshine, evoking “the warmth of the sun's rays, radiating a brilliant light that illuminates the world. Pensacola—known for its lush beaches, crashing waves, and endless summer—embodies the Hizashi vibe,” the site reads. Readers can get tickets from the website, priced at $25 for adults, $15 for students and free for children 5 and under.
