The anime blast from the past is celebrating her 40th birthday in a big way, and fans can celebrate by taking home party favors.
Debuting in 1983, Creamy Mami is a Japanese pop culture icon whose influence is still felt in many ways. Created by Studio Pierrot, she debuted in the magical girl anime series Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel. Spanning a year with 52 episodes, the series follows Yū Morisawa, a young girl who – after an encounter with aliens – gains the ability to transform into a 16-year-old girl. Impressing others with her singing ability and becoming a pop star, she uses her new magic wand and shapeshifting abilities to take on the identity of Creamy Mami, who now appears once more on some brand new items.
In honor of the original series turning 40, AMNIBUS is waving its own magic wand. Several collections featuring Creamy Mami will be available, including table mats, keyrings and acrylic holders. These introduce both Creamy Mami herself and her younger alter ego, along with the cat-like creature Nega, who also appeared in the classic series. Other items available for fans to purchase include various apparel, including hats and hoodies. Fans can pre-order these items through the Japanese AMNIBUS website until December 20.
Creamy Mami is a landmark character when it comes to multimedia marketing and promotion through anime. This method is also used in Super Dimension Fortress Macross, which has its own idol Minmay and is now 40 years old. Ironically, Harmony Gold (who localized Macross and several unrelated anime as Robotech) planned to give Creamy Mami a similar treatment through Pretty Creamy the Perfect Pop Star, but the series was not yet ever done. However, since the early 80s, the concept of idol anime has become an ever-popular genre in Japan, with many real-life singers/voice artists making careers as fictional characters. this structure. One such example is Takako Ōta, who voiced Creamy Mami in the original 1983 anime series.
Recently, the franchise has continued in the form of the comic book series Magical Angel Creamy Mami and the Spoiled Princess. Imagery from the anime Creamy Mami has also been given new life through futuristic funk and wind music genres. They sample songs from the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s and remix them to create a melancholic or upbeat effect, with Creamy Mami’s sweet image fitting the magical girl series Sailor Moon in future funk music videos. The original anime also featured some extremely popular songs, which many old fans were able to hum while displaying their AMNIBUS products to celebrate the series’ 40th anniversary.
