Spy x Family fans may recall that during the Bus Robbery arc, DaKarenn promised Anya a cake as a thank you for her support and help? Well, at least Anya thought so (incorrectly) and continues to think so. However, the fact that she thought that way led to DaKarenn now believing that he needed to keep that promise even though he never did in the first place. Currently at Ch. 88 However, finally after about a 6 week hiatus, it looks like Anya will get her long-awaited cake… or maybe not? That will depend on whether DaKarenn can give it to her or not.
Spy x Family Ch. 88: Details
Quite appropriate for a chapter as full of fluff as this one, I believe.
Spy x Family Ch. 88 is the latest chapter of the manga of the same name by Tatsuya Endo (Blade of the Moon Princess). This is also a sequel to Bus Robbery (you can read reviews of Pt. 1, Pt. 2, Pt. 3, Pt. 4, Pt. 5, Pt. 6 and the aftermath here) , even though it doesn’t explicitly say so. Casey Loe returns as translator, with Rina Mapa also returning as letterer. Shueisha originally published the manga in Japan under their Jump Comics+ imprint in the Shōnen Jump+ magazine. Viz Media is the company that publishes this manga in English in North America.
Spy x Family Ch. 88 made its debut in October 15, 2023. You can read it completely free on Shonen Visit Viz Media. Ch. 88 will remain free for the 2 chapters after that. When the third chapter was later released, Ch. 88 will go into the Shonen Jump vault. You will then have to pay a subscription fee to read it and all previous chapters. Admittedly, the fee is only $2.99 per month, so it’s not a big deal for your wallet. Likewise, if you’re short on cash then you might want to quickly read Ch. 88 free before you can’t get any more.
As a side note: Spy x Family currently has an anime adaptation premiering April 9, 2022. In fact, season 2 just premiered October 7, 2023. You can watch all episodes on Crunchyroll or Hulu. Note, however, that only Crunchyroll has any dubs. So, if you like watching the English dub for some reason then you must watch the anime on Crunchyroll.
Spy x Family Ch. 88: Plot summary
Anya’s face when she realized she was finally about to receive the cake.
Spy x Family Ch. 88 begins with DaKarenn holding a bag of cookies. Such a simple thing but wait, this is not an ordinary cake. It’s a super expensive cake fit for royalty. Why did he get it? Well, back in the Bus Heist Arc, Anya lent DaKarenn a handkerchief after the terrorists at Red Circus put a (thankfully fake) bomb necklace around his neck. So DaKarenn now feels indebted to Anya. Luckily, Anya’s (false) belief that DaKarenn had promised her the cake as a reward gave him an easy way to repay that debt. Now all he has to do is give the cake to Anya.
Alas, DaKarenn makes this simple task much more difficult than it needs to be. He doesn’t want anyone to actually see him give the cake to Anya for fear of damaging his reputation as a “descendant of the Desmond family.” Anya knows about the cake thanks to her telepathic abilities and she doesn’t know why DaKarenn is making it so difficult, but she wants that cake bad.
So Anya conspires with Becky to get DaKarenn alone. So Anya can have that cake, of course, although Becky’s soap opera fan brains interpret the gesture as romantic. It actually took Anya a few tries, but she finally managed to write a legible message to DaKarenn to meet her in the yard during break. Sure, there’s blood splattered everywhere from Anya stabbing herself while writing it, but at least it doesn’t look like the scribbles of a drunk squirrel. Now if only they could meet in private.
Attack of the Peanut Gallery?
Alas, Becky looks so much like Becky.
Alas, neither DaKarenn nor Anya had that kind of privacy. Becky, Emile, and Ewen have all decided to become their peanut galleries for various reasons, thus giving DaKarenn and Anya a break from it. However, they cannot escape their actively interested peanut gallery and so they end up fighting for it. Anya makes a final attempt to get DaKarenn to give her the cake by hugging, which sets DaKarenn’s young heart ablaze. The sudden disappearance of their peanut gallery finally allows DaKarenn to deliver the cakes to Anya… and then Henry Henderson shows up to spoil the fun, confiscating the cakes as contraband and the kids seemed to have ignored the warning bell to go to class.
Henderson is not without heart. He makes DaKarenn and Anya stay after school to write an apology report in his office, then promptly invites them out for tea after the report is finished. A tea session includes delicious crispy cakes that DaKarenn has brought and that they can now both enjoy. Alas, the fun is ruined when Anya’s telepathy reveals to her that DaKarenn has a crush on her. Disgusted with the romance aimed at her, Anya withdraws her request to be friends with DaKarenn to buy cake. Of course, this leads to a heated argument between her and DaKarenn.
Did Anya fail in her mission to create world peace by befriending DaKarenn? Well, we’ll find out later in Spy x Family when Tatsuya Endo returns to this storyline.
Spy x Family Ch. 88: Good things
Anya’s daily diary school life is always an interesting and interesting thing.
Obviously, what makes Spy x Family Ch. 88 is the story. Specifically: Anya’s daily school life. I’m a huge fan of slice-of-life comedies like this. Not only that, it’s even plot-related to boot. It’s basically a continuation of the aftermath of the Bus Robbery Arc. When you see a big event that is so significant in the story that it creates additional stories reacting to it, you know there’s a very deeply thought-out story here.
And of course, it’s Tatsuya Endo’s usual quality art here to continue making Spy x Family Ch. 88 great. He continued to show off his facial expression skills. The faces DaKarenn and Anya made in response to his feelings for her were priceless. There’s a reason why this manga is great and the art is part of it.
Oh, and crispy tea cakes too. It’s fun to see beautifully drawn dishes in manga. Spy x Family Ch. The 88 happened to be a pleasant surprise for me in that regard.
Spy x Family Ch. 88: Bad things
He can’t seem to spit it out, but then again, he’s 6-7 years old anyway.
If you only like the dramatic action scenes of Spy x Family, you will definitely be bored to tears by Ch. 88. Again, if you only liked those parts then why did you stay in the manga for so long? Maybe, just maybe, you really like the scraps of life too? This is just a suggestion here. You are free to think about it for as long as you like.
