Viz Media licensed the manga in English. The Kyoto Incident arc begins in Volume 8 of the manga, which is described as:
In the 11th year of Meiji, on what is now known in the Western calendar as May 14, time begins to flow once more. With the shocking midday assassination of Home Affairs Director Okubo a fait accompli, Kenshin departs for Kyoto, amid chaos and bloodshed—against the wishes of nearly everyone who knew him as the gentle “rurouni.” Awaiting him is Shishio Makoto, the hitokiri who has replaced the cold-eyed assassin Himura Battosai, who has sworn more murder and taken up the reverse-bladed sakabatô. But has Kenshin come to Kyoto to duel…or to fight to the death?
