Note: It's been a while since I've watched anime. So I won't be making any comparisons on how the anime did. Well, there will be one, but I'll skip that part a bit.
Story Summary
Kotori meets Inuzuka-sensei (Kouhei) to help her study. Tsumugi wants her mother's “dry curry”, so she and her father (Kouhei) go to the restaurant “Megumi” to make it with Kotori. Kouhei and Tsumugi go to the beach and fish. They return to the restaurant “Megumi” to prepare clothes and cook, then eat.
Kouhei gets sick so Tsumugi goes out to buy groceries for him. She is found by Kotori and he assures her that she will get home safely. When he gets better, Kotori throws them a party at a restaurant.
Kotori's mother (Megumi) tells her that she is going to reopen the restaurant “Megumi”. This makes Kotori depressed because it means she won't have time to spend with Inuzuka-sensei and Tsumugi. Kouhei is about to reopen but has too much work to talk to Kotori's mother. So Kotori invites him back the next day. Kouhei returns with Tsumugi where they prepare food. Kotori asks her mother if they can continue to use the restaurant on weekends and holidays, and she agrees.
More cooking and slices of life
As with all the manga in this series, about half of it will be devoted to cooking. I suppose it could be classified as a cooking manga. So in Sweet and Flash Episode 03the first featured dish is warm bread porridge. Next is homemade dry curry. Then aji, the fish. Next is hiyashi chuka (literally “chilled Chinese”, made with cold ramen noodles). Finally, tamagoyaki, a Japanese rolled omelette.
As for the actual story, I continue to like Kotori and Kouhei's relationship. Despite their age gap (probably around 10 years) and the fact that Kouhei is Kotori's teacher, I really wanted them to become a couple by the end of the story. The reason for this is that there's something very wholesome about their relationship.
Kouhei doesn't have any feelings for Kotori, other than friendship and as a teacher. Kotori has feelings for Kouhei but she hasn't admitted it yet. However, Kotori and Kouhei work well together when they cook. And even at school, they would secretly talk during breaks. (I say secretly because Kotori usually sits outside the window, and Kouhei happens to sit next to the window, so no one knows they're talking.)
I found it interesting that Megumi seemed to be aware of her daughter possibly having a crush on Kouhei. However, she knew it was harmless because Kouhei would never do anything that would go against Kotori’s wishes. That was backed up by the fact that Tsumugi was always there for them. And Kotori loved Tsumugi, almost like a mother. Likewise, Tsumugi loved Kotori. I mean, the whole thing just made me go “Han-yaan!” 😂
Shark Song
Although I don't intend to compare the anime adaptation of Sweetness and Lightning Volume 03but there is one element I want to discuss. When I watched episode 7 of the anime, the thing I remember most from the episode was the song “Shark” that Tsumugi sang.
[nội dung được nhúng]In the manga, the song is only a single panel, so she's clearly not imagining sharks. And the whole thing with these two high school girls is three panels in total. Then the stuff about the jets (she's not imagining pterodactyls) and the dog is just another page. However, as seen in the video above (assuming the embed is still working when you read this), the anime expands on this a lot.
And yet, this is the kind of edit I don't mind in an anime adaptation. Yes, it's filler, but it's good filler. It makes for a simple scene, and for me, it makes for one of the most adorable, memorable anime songs ever. 😆
Omake
Manga omake chapter in Sweetness and Lightning Episode 03 mentions that Tsumugi's favorite anime has a new theme song. She then watches the show with her dad, who doesn't understand it.
There's a note from Amagakure-sensei. This is followed by a quick preview for the next volume. The book ends with a promotional diary from Kodansha Comics.
Final Thoughts and Shock
Final, Sweetness and Flash Episode 03 Continuing the series about healthy living, cooking. I really love the chemistry between Kotori, Kouhei and Tsumugi.
