Ranma 1/2 05
らんま1/2
Summary/Spoiler Summary
After Akane's hair was cut, Ryouga and female Ranma took it upon themselves to ask for a punch. In the end, Akane also accepted. Ranma quietly followed Akane home, observing her depression. At home, she rebuffs his attempts to approach her, recalling how she grew her hair long because of teenage Kasumi-oneechan and Tofu-sensei's attraction to her. While cooking dinner, Akane's short hair makes her dizzy. However, she cuts it for Akane.
Ranma escorts the injured Akane to Tofu-sensei's clinic. While there, she was told by Tofu-sensei that it was cute that she went back to her old hairstyle. However, Akane cried a lot when she accepted Tofu-sensei would never like her the way he treated Kasumi. As Ranma and Akane walk home, Ranma comments that her new hairstyle is cute. Feeling playful, Akane made Ranma fall into the river canal to transform into a woman.
That night, Ryouga appeared to challenge Ranma. Ryouga made so much noise that it woke up Kasumi and Akane. They don't recognize Ryouga so Kasumi asks Akane to throw a large weight at him. Ryouga tried to run away, but when the female Ranma “caught” him, all he found were clothes and a backpack. Ranma sees a dog nearby and assumes it is Ryouga's cursed form.
Meanwhile, back at Touda's house, Akane finds an injured piglet wearing a bandana. Ranma returns with the dog and discovers it is not Ryouga. Akane forces Ranma to bathe the pig, causing it to transform into Ryouga. A new war broke out so female Ranma forced Ryouga back into his pig form. Akane took the pig to bed with her. When Ranma tried to chase the pig out, Akane thought he was trying to attack her.
Thinking/Evaluating
With Ranma 1/2 05 we get to see Ryouga's cursed piglet form. Thus begins a tiresome joke that lasts until the series ends. Ryouga will show up, demand a fight, be turned into a pig, Akane carries the pig to her bed (because that's what everyone in Japan would do), Ranma gets jealous, his attempt to expose Ryouga failed, Ranma was punished, and Ryouga's Secret remained safe. Uh. I do NOT expect countless variations of this to come.
Seriously, to solve the problem, all Ranma had to do was let Akane know and then prove it, which was easy enough. But because of the “joke,” the story would never have been written that way. The status quo must be maintained. And while I won't stop watching the series because of this, I'm already bored of it, thanks to watching the OG anime adaptation.
One thing I forgot was how young Kasumi was when Tofu-sensei fell in love with her. I wonder how many people this will trigger. That aside, I liked that Akane resolved her feelings for Tofu-sensei and had a good cry.
On the comedy side, I laughed when Kasumi easily picked up the heavy dumbbell she had Akane throw at the intruder.
Finally (because I'm busy I'll say again that the official subtitles are just trash. Adapters who claim to be better writers than the actual author are not qualified to translate/adapt the works of that author.
Final thoughts and conclusion
In the end, I was fine with the story within Ranma 1/2 05 as presented. Aside from my negative feelings about the subtitles, I'm preparing myself for what the future holds.
