Ragna Crimson volume 7 begins to showcase the high-concept action set pieces that the series has increasingly excelled at over time.
The battle between Ragna and Ultimatia is intensely action-packed and sets the series apart from similar works. Having a villain use the power to stop time is a fairly common trope in action-adventure series. Typically, these powers are some of the most powerful abilities around. The nature and implementation vary but the hero will often face real difficulties. Ultimatia’s use of time-stopping powers is within expectations since she’s the nominal leader of the villain faction, so of course she wields one of the most powerful abilities.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Kobayashi had Ragna fight Ultimatia at the beginning of the series. The audience expected the ability to stop time to be strong not only based on the idea but also based on pre-existing metaphors in other works. That means that when Ragna decides to challenge head on, the importance and danger involved is not lost on the viewer. Furthermore, Ragna not only accepted the challenge but also overcame Ultimatia’s time-stopping power. This illustrates quite clearly how strong our main character is as he was able to overcome her strength and almost win right then and there, without outside interference and pushing too strong, too fast.
Establishing these power expectations early on sets Ragna Crimson apart from many other works in the genre. Ragna doesn’t go on a journey from zero to hero; in fact, his hero journeyed back to his zero self and pushed him to the end of the game. The pedal hits the floor and the engine is red hot—fasten your seat belts, everyone.
