Since the earliest versions of Epic Games’ Fortnite, players have been able to customize the look of their player avatars through what fans call skins. Many of the original skins are the game’s original characters. But as the game has grown in popularity, there have been many interface collaborations. These collaborations range from Marvel and DC comic book characters to game characters such as Master Chief from the Halo series or Doom Slayer from the Doom series. There are also anime collaborations with Naruto, Dragon Ball, My Hero AcadeKaren, Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen. In the update, players can now unlock Solid Snake from the Metal Gear franchise.

First revealed on December 3 via Fortnite’s seasonal Battle Pass, fans of both Fortnite and Metal Gear have been waiting to unlock the skin. However, purchasing the Battle Pass is not enough for players to receive the Solid Snake skin. Players must complete certain in-game challenges before unlocking the character. Among those challenges, a select few borrow from the Metal Gear games and require players to sneak around the battlefield in a box. It has a relevant and interesting theme.
In addition to the Solid Snake outfit, players can also get emotes (non-combat actions), gliders (in-game parachutes), cosmetic covers for your weapons and vehicles, back-bling (an accessory the character wears on his back), a pickaxe (used to get materials to build a fortress), and two different loading screens. While this may not seem like much to players when completing various challenges, it is something that takes effort to complete.
The Metal Gear battle pass item isn’t the only thing Epic Games has added to Fortnite. In both the battle royale’s built and unbuilt modes, players can find two new items to use: the EMP Stealth Camo and the aforementioned Cardboard Box. The former provides the player with temporary cloaking, and an EMP blast at the tip of the cloak can remove some opponents’ shield health or stop vehicles for a short time. Cardboard Boxes provide cover from a bullet but at the cost of your movement speed or cover. Additionally, at the northern end of the battle royale map, Solid Snake is there as an interactable character. If you meet him, he will sell you EMP Stealth Camo, a cardboard box. You can also hire him as a mercenary who will help you in combat by periodically revealing the locations of other players within a certain radius.

Outside of the battle royale game mode, Epic Games has also brought the Raiden bundle to the Fortnite store. This pack includes Metal Gear’s Raiden figure, his signature katana as a back decoration and a pickaxe (as a separate item), weapon and vehicle cover. This bundle retails for an in-game purchasable currency of 1,800 V-Bucks (approximately $18.00 USD).

The addition of Solid Snake and Raiden to Fortnite is certainly exciting for Metal Gear fans. Price in V-Bucks for both is 2,750 (about $22.99 USD). If you’ve wanted to play Solid Snake or Raiden outside of Metal Gear, you now have your chance in Fortnite. Just know that Solid Snake will no longer exist after the end of the current season.
