Fairy Tail Hiro Mashima shared about the process of creating the series during a Q&A session at this year's New York Comic Con.
Responding to a fan's question about whether the theme was about friendship Fairy Tail whether taken from his own life or not, Mashima frankly admitted: “To tell you the truth, I wrote this story because I have no friends. My loneliness is what you see in Fairy Tail.”
The revelation struck a chord with fans, many of whom credit the series with helping them navigate their own struggles.
One attendee shared, “Fairy Tail helped me overcome a lot of my struggles in high school and helped me connect with my friends on a deeper level.”
Mashima also expressed his surprise at the film's global popularity. “When I was first invited to New York Comic Con, I didn't believe there was a worldwide audience. I was immediately surprised by the warmth of the fan community [tại NYCC],” he shared, expressing his gratitude to Fairy Tail's international community.
Hiro Mashima launches manga Fairy Tail in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine from August 2006 to July 2017, with individual chapters collected and published in 63 tankobon volumes.
The manga was adapted into an animated series by A-1 Pictures, Dentsu Inc., Satelight, Bridge and CloverWorks that aired from October 2009 to March 2013. The second season aired from April 2014 to March 2016. The third and final season aired from October 2018 to September 2019.
The film has also inspired many spin-off manga, including the Mashima prequel, Fairy Tail Zero and a sequel he wrote, titled Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest. Additionally, A-1 Pictures has developed nine original animated films and two animated feature films.
