Dean Damonse is reportedly set to play Luffy’s father in the Netflix live-action One Piece series.
On Twitter, an unofficial One Piece news site called @OP_Netflix_Fan recently shared a post stating that Damonse will play Monkey D. Dragon in the upcoming series adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s beloved manga series. . In response to the confusion about Damonse’s youth, OP_Netflix_Fan theorized that they might have chosen someone younger with multiple seasons in mind. They also note that Damonse can play both young and old versions of the character, even though his CV only lists him as “Dragon”.
Damonse .’s previous acting credits
Dean Damonse has taken on many roles for other television productions. He played a martial artist in the 2018 TV series Arendsvlei, which revolves around a family whose school and legacy is threatened by a revenge-obsessed young woman. The show stars Melissa De Vries (Sasha Daniels), Celeste Matthews Wannenburgh (Gertie Cupido) and Sherman Pharo (Thys Cupido), among others. Damonse also worked as a lighting assistant in the production of Fraksie, a South African television series about the mistakes of a tech wizard and an investor who wants to become a millionaire. This series is set to premiere in 2022.
Damonse is said to play one of the most notorious criminals in the One Piece universe. Monkey D. Dragon, who is sometimes referred to as the “Rebellious Dragon”, was one of the founding members of the Revolutionary Army. This powerful military organization has only one goal: to overthrow and destroy the World Government. Although Dragon was Luffy’s biological father, he was absent for most of his life, as the young pirate was actually raised by his grandfather, Monkey. D. Garp. However, Dragon re-enacts Luffy’s life in the Loguetown section of the manga, where he helps his son escape from Vice Admiral Smoker. He also saved Sabo, Luffy’s adopted brother, from drowning after the World Nobles’ attack.
Netflix recently revealed the first full trailer for One Piece, showcasing some action scenes with Luffy (Inaki Godoy), Nami (Emily Rudd) and Zoro (Mackenyu). Fans also got their first look at Buggy the Clown, one of the first major villains in the manga’s plot. While the trailer offers a strong taste of what fans can expect from the upcoming episode, the trailer has received mixed responses from some viewers. Korean One Piece fans seem particularly conflicted, unsure if the show is worth watching or merely looks like a “high-quality cosplay”.
Netflix’s live-action One Piece series will premiere on August 31. The One Piece manga is available in English from Viz Media.
