The newly released movie Mobile Suit Tsuna Seed Freedom is Japan’s latest weekend box office king (January 26-28). Sequels to Mobile SuitGundam Seed and Mobile SuitGundam Seed Destiny came in first place with 634k viewers and a total revenue of 1.06 billion yen (~US$7.2 million).
Mobile Suit Gun Seed Freedom takes place in Cosmic Era (CE) 75, five years after Mobile Suit Gun Seed debuted. Protagonist Kira Yamato and many of the series’ main characters are now part of a peacekeeping organization called COMPS During this period of the Space Age timeline, an anti-Coordinator faction called Blue Cosmos are carrying out attacks, while the Foundation Kingdom seeks independence from the Eurasian Federation.
In the real world, the gap between the new film’s worlds and the original series spans more than two decades — Seed debuted in 2002, while Seed Destiny began airing in 2004. Sequel announcement of the film was first reported in 2006. In 2016, series composer of Seed and Seed Destiny, Chiaki Morosawa, who is credited as one of the scriptwriters for Seed Freedom, passed away from aortic dissection. In 2021, it was revealed that the film was in production.
Gundam.info describes Seed as:

“Rising tensions between the Earth Alliance and ZAFT Forces caused by the tragedy of ‘Bloody Valentine’ have erupted into all-out war.” The Earth Alliance’s mobile armored forces and tanks launched…the mobile armors were destroyed one after another…
“It seems a foregone conclusion that the Earth Alliance, with its superior numbers, will prevail. But this initial assessment has been proven wrong. Nearly 11 months have passed since the conflict began and there is still no sign of ending…”
