Besides the Avengers, Marvel Studios is also actively building many other teams in its cinematic universe (MCU). These include the Young Avengers (with members such as Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop), Midnight Sons (Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night), or Defenders (Daredevil, Jessica Jones), and of course, Thunderbolts – Marvel's “Suicide Squad”.
Recently, the first trailer of Thunderbolt* has been officially announced, revealing the full lineup of Marvel Comics' most famous anti-hero team, with familiar faces such as Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier), Ava Starr (Ghost), John Walker (US Agent), Yelena Belova (Black Widow), Alexei Shostakov (Red Guardian) and Antonia Dreykov (Taskmaster). This will also be the project that closes the 5th phase of the MCU.
The first official trailer for Thunderbolt*, the final blockbuster of MCU phase 5 – Video: Marvel Studios.
According to the trailer above, the members of Thunderbolt were gathered by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. This is the person who recruited US Agent in the series' finale. The Falcon & the Winter Soldierwho also “pulled the strings” for Yelena to kill Clint Barton in the Hawkeye series. It can be seen that, from Valentina’s perspective, Thunderbolt is a collection of bad guys, villains, people who have committed many crimes in the past and are very suitable for suicide missions.
In addition, it seems that a mysterious force is plotting to destroy the members of Thunderbolt by making them kill each other. That is also when the team encounters Bob – a character that fans are speculating is Sentry, Marvel's “Superman”. However, it is still unclear whether Sentry is the main villain of this blockbuster or not.
All the main roles in Thunderbolt* will be led by familiar faces from previous Marvel Studios projects. These include Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov), Wyatt Russell (John Walker), Olga Kurylenko (Antonia Dreykov), Hannah John-Kamen (Ava Starr) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Valentina). The mysterious character Bob will be played by Lewis Pullman.
As expected, Thunderbolt* will be released in May 2025.
