November 5 marked a sad day for manga fans around the world with the news of horror manga icon Kazuo Umezu's passing. Fans took to social media to express their gratitude:

楳図さんに最後にお会いしたのは六本木ヒルズで開かれていた 「楳図かずお大美術展」の会場でした。その前には音楽の話やらなにやた。お元気だとばかり思っていたので、まだ気持ちの整理がつきません。寂しいpic.twitter.com/NhYczwhoIw

The last time I saw Umezu-san was at “Kazuo Umezz: The Great Art Exhibition,” held in Roppongi Hills. Before that, we had a good time talking about music, etc. I thought he was doing well so I still couldn't handle my emotions. I miss him. May he rest in peace.

I'm not a big fan of Kazuo Umezu-sensei and don't actively collect his books, but I will read his works if I see them, and above all Half-Fish Man is the first manga I understood when I was a child, so I'd say he was like a midwife to me.
Thank you so much for your creative efforts over such a long period of time.

The French Embassy was extremely saddened to learn of Kazuo's passing. Umezu. Many were horrified and fascinated by his art, its combination of the grotesque and the beautiful, horror and laughter, the real and the unreal. His unique worldview was recognized in 2018 when he received the Heritage Award at the Angoulême International Comic Book Festival. May he rest in peace.

Kazuo Umezu-sensei has passed away… I'm so sad. I will read The Drifting Class while crying. I marvel at the fact that this incredible masterpiece was serialized from 1972 to 1974. The only character, Sekiya, is still so strong that people still talk about it, and Sho-chan is eternal. Persevere like a hero who never gives up on life.

I pray for the soul of manga author Kazuo Umezu-sensei.
I first met her about 50 years ago during a discussion for Jotomo magazine. He is a very kind person, the complete opposite of Reptilia, and we quickly became good friends and wrote the song “Makoto-chan” together. Drifting Classroom and Iara are timeless masterpieces.
He suddenly appeared the year my husband passed away and drew this picture for me.

Thank you to Kazuo Umezu-sensei for the pleasant conversation during your appearance on the show.
A sweet personality… the sentiment behind many of his masterpieces such as The Drifting Classroom, My Name is Shingo, and Fourteen…
The story of the mysterious group of hooded people who came to his house…
A lighting problem occurred during the recording of the show…
Those are memories that will last a lifetime.
I would like to send my deepest condolences.

Kazuo Umezu-sensei has passed away… 😭
Drifting Classroom has been adapted into movies many times but it's disappointing that all of them are edited versions.
I drew the model so I hope Netflix or somewhere will faithfully turn it into an anime.I think works like My Name Is Shingo and Fourteen are works chosen by God and are amazing!

I can'I don't believe I'll never see you again, the true god I love and respect, Kazuo Umezu-sensei.
That time two years ago was the last time I was able to see you.
You are so pure, kind and warm, such a great presence.I love drawing because of Kazuo Umezu-sensei's beautiful and scary manga.
I didn't quit my job at that time because Kazuo Umezu-sensei said “See you later!” that day.
The characters for my name Shoko are taken from Sho-chan, my favorite character from The Drifting Classroom.
My life is what it is today thanks to Kazuo Umezu-sensei.
There are people all over the world who were saved by his pure childlike heart, his precise and unique drawings and imagination, as well as the world that Kazuo Umezu-sensei created.
I am truly grateful for his works and his wonderful personality.I was overwhelmed with a sense of loss.
I always dreamed of meeting him again. His wonderful works will continue to reach many people forever.
I will always love you, Kazuo Umezu-sensei.Shōko Nakagawa

Kazuo Umezu-sensei's Ultraman is so unique and scary that I'd love to see it adapted into an anime or live-action movie. I'm sure Tsuburaya Productions, which continues to take on new challenges, can do that.

I have all of Kazuo Umezu-sensei's books on the market, but I haven't been able to film any of his works yet.
I want to create a loyal Drifting Class.
The only memory I have is of him appearing in Tokyo Zombie.

My memory isn't what it used to be, but Kazuo Umezu-sensei drew Ultraman in the Magazine [Shonen] and Kaiju Gyo were also memorable. I know Cat Eyed Boy and Orochi but I don't remember reading them, and Drifting Class started while I was re-reading them. My Macotofly comes from Marty McFly and Makoto Mushi. RIP

When I finish reading a good manga, it's normal to wish I could erase my memory and read it again. As for Umezu's FLOATING CLASSROOM, I especially wish I could have read it as a 4th grader–it seemed to blend all my childhood anxieties into one cauldron of terror. Kazuo Umezu-sensei,
I read and reread Kyofu and Kai, especially “Omi-chan ga Konya mo Yattekuru” which instilled in me the most terrible fear.
It's still a scary manga and one of my favorites.
I read it before bed on nights when I want to shiver to sleep.
Thank you for bringing back the most fearful feeling.
