La+ Darknesss of hoolive is now a published manga author! As an anime blogger and a Plusmate, I had to write about it.
Shoujo manga magazine Hana to Yume is celebrating its 50th anniversary. As part of the festivities, they published an interview with La+ in issue 14 of 2024, in which the head of holoX talks about various topics related to shoujo manga. She also had the opportunity to write the script for a manga series illustrated by Chitose Shiki. We've seen manga about virtual reality talents before, but never one of them has been officially published.
The one-shot titled My Oshi Knight-themed Streamer is Actually My Bespectacled Male Coworker!? As implied, it's about a girl who discovers that her gentle coworker is her favorite online personality. It's a humorous topic and perfect for a VTuber to write about. La+ has the interests of both an old man and a young girl in many ways, and that shows in this cute story.
Regarding the interview, here are some highlights:
La+ is an avid reader. She usually reads 40 volumes of manga and other books a month. Even if she has a busy month, she will still read around 20. Although she seems to be more of a shounen type, half of her reading is shoujo manga. She thinks Hana to Yume can appeal to both boys and girls. What she likes can change, but lately, she has been into more traditional shoujo romances. Yazawa Ai was how she got into manga—especially Nana and Paradise Kiss. Yazawa's job made her want to become a fashion designer, which she studied. La+ actually still does fashion design. (During the broadcast revealing her casual outfit, she mentioned designing the entire outfit from head to toe. She also mentioned before that she would probably be a designer if she didn't join hoolive.) The title that made her read Hana to Yume is Ouran High School's Host Club. Kyouya (whom she calls “Kyouya-sama”) is the one who sparked her love for glasses. (In general, La+ describes herself as liking characters wearing glasses rather than characters wearing glasses.) After Ouran, the big Hana to Yume titles that took her further were Yona of the Dawn and Snow White with the Red Hair. What she looks for in female protagonists differs between shounen and shoujo. Before, she liked girls who were super talented and extremely cute. On the contrary, she likes very normal and ordinary shoujo heroines. Her favorite Hana to Yume titles currently running are It Takes More Than a Pretty Face to Love and Tamon's B-Sides.
