Summary
The story of two brothers reunited in the Digital World is the emotional highlight of this season; Koji and Koichi's backstory is one of the darkest in the series. The DigiDestined use Spirit Digivolution to transform into ancient Digimon warriors, each possessing a human and an animal form. The reliance on complex lore and a constantly changing cast of villains results in repetitive, meandering storytelling.
Digimon BorderThe fourth season of Digimon: Digital Monsters, continues the mold-breaking innovations of the previous season. This time, DigiDestined doesn't have a Digimon partner, they become them through Spirit Digivolution. Stubborn Takuya, stubborn Koji, bratty Zoe, incompetent JP, and whiny Tommy are your typical normal kids who are whisked away to the Digital World to save it. But this time, the kids don't like each other and have to learn to get along throughout the season. Since they don't have a Digimon partner to guide them, they're joined by Bokomon and his goofy sidekick, Neemon.
The DigiDestined eventually discover that they are there to protect the Digital World from the villainous Cherubimon and his five Legendary Warriors, who are seeking to awaken the ancient evil Digimon, Lucemon. The plot is winding and relies heavily on the lore surrounding the war between human and beast-type Digimon. It takes place before the kids arrive, and has no connection to previous seasons, except for a few familiar digital monsters.
Many of these concepts were divisive when Frontier debuted in 2002 and American audiences didn't give it a chance, but it has since become a classic. Although Frontier is a completely new reimagining of Digimon. It boasts some of the most beautiful Digimon designs of all time, combined with an emotional storyline revolving around Koji and his long-lost brother meeting again, making it a worthy addition to the series.
