Anime Tokyo announced on Sunday that the Shin Yaranai ka anime adaptation of Junichi Yamakawa’s Kuso Miso Technique manga will premiere on April 1, 2024. (The announcement adds the clause in parentheses,”*It is truth.”) That was it—the anniversary of the anime’s official announcement, even though the production team had planned to complete the anime for an early release this fall. Anime Tokyo also introduces new key images:

The story begins with Masaki Michishita, an ordinary preparatory student rushing to the bathroom in the park one day. Despite his haste, he still saw Takakazu Abe, an extremely handsome auto mechanic sitting on a bench. The two exchanged looks and after Abe exclaimed “Yaranai ka” (Shall we do it?), the two began their meeting. The anime will expand upon the one-shot manga and incorporate elements from Yamakawa’s other works, as well as the author’s own unique story elements.
Kingyoiro’s Studio Pierre Itō (Kenda Master Ken, World, Before You End) is directing the anime. “Ikansoku” is writing the script and Taiten Kawakami is collaborating on the script. Studio Leo and Anime Tokyo, LLC are producing the anime. Bungaku Itō and Cyzo are credited for collaborating on the original work.
“Yoshirō Sasaki” will voice Takakazu Abe in the anime, and Sorate (“who just graduated from high school”) will voice Masaki Michishita. (Pierre Itō personally discovered the manga on the online forum Futaba Channel during his middle school years, and later created and posted an unofficial live-action video for fans on YouTube under the pen name “Yoshirō Sasaki.”)
Anime Tokyo is producing original anime videos of moderate length for all ages. The staff began producing the animation in May.
The anime’s crowdfunding campaign surpassed 8,000,000 yen (about US$57,300) on May 17, raising a total of 8,680,500 yen (about US$62,200). Since then, the staff has removed some funds so the official total falls short of the target, but the staff reports that the anime is still continuing.
Yamakawa published the original one-shot manga in the second issue of BaraComi, a special spin-off manga of the gay magazine Barazoku, in 1987. In the early 2000s, the dialogue of the manga “Yaranai ka” was became an Internet meme.
