Oh KONOSUBA, no matter how hard my day gets, you are always there to put a smile on my face and hurt my sides with laughter. Our favorite expedition team is back after several years, and they continue to provide the stability and charm of a sleep-deprived DND campaign. There are brief moments where everyone works together and coordinates, but 80% of the time it's just pure chaos and screaming. It's good to be home!
This season's first episode continues from the end with a brief recap. The film directly informs a lot of the third season's story developments, in which Kazuma's worldview and environment are influenced by people curious about his heroic exploits. In fact, it's all about raising his expectations of living out a fantastic fantasy adventure, only for him to become humbled extremely quickly when he realizes exactly what kind of show it is. which I participate. KONOSUBA has trained me to this extent that if Kazuma is reminiscing about something or thinks something is going one way, it's pretty safe to assume the opposite will happen. Although there is a clear formula to the comedy, it never stopped making me laugh thanks to the expressive animation and great voice acting. I swear there were a few moments where it seemed like the voice actors were actually screaming in anguish and anxiety in the booth, but anything below that wouldn't have been as impactful.
I don't want these reviews to just be me listing my favorite jokes from each episode, but I think the dinner scene in episode two surmises a lot of potential for the season. With the spotlight now on Kazuma, it will become more and more difficult for him to achieve victory by taking a sneaky and ill-advised route. If it wasn't for Darkness, he probably would have gotten into trouble at the dinner party in episode two or ended up messing things up while staying at the castle in episode three because it's only now that he's been able to go on his own. However, I like that this is the established dynamic within the group at the moment. They're all messed up in some shape or form, but only when they come together can they overcome these more common imaginary situations. Even if they succeed, there's always a warning or an immediate next action they need to deal with, which means they barely have time to rest! (Or, in Aqua's case, stay awake).
Despite all that, I appreciated that the first two episodes showcased the camaraderie between our four main characters. All of them criticizing each other for nonsense was one thing, but I had forgotten how important their relationship was. We see Megumi angry on Kazuma's behalf, which is his general emotional support, which could be the foundation for a romance to blossom between the two. Darkness may be a stubborn masochist, but she always stands by her teammates and it's nice to see Kazuma always looking out for her when she's surrounded by nobles who don't know her true self . She seems to truly believe in Kazuma as a leader and friend, even if she doesn't always approve of his methods, while he enjoys seeing her happy with as an explorer. Then there's Aqua, who serves as the perfect no-nonsense foil, like the sister in the dump, and you don't want to leave her alone.
I think that's the reason that episode three didn't feel as strong as episodes one and two. I liked Kazuma's relationship with the princess and actually felt sorry for her because like Darkness, she seemed to be living a sheltered, noble life. I was surprised that the show went so far as to establish that her kingdom is under constant attack, which makes her sheltered life sound more plausible. I don't think she'll become a member of the main cast, but I can see her definitely becoming a recurring character, especially with all the talk about the possibility of her becoming an explorer. But honestly, the highlight of episode three is when the gang gets back together because that's when the show feels the strongest. Plus, I feel like Kazuma looks better next to his teammates because when you leave him to fend for himself, he starts crawling into territory that doesn't make him nearly as adorable.
However, I don't expect our cast to reunite under these particular circumstances because while everyone is together again, they are also forced to stay at the residence of the noble that the house belongs to. which they destroyed earlier in the show. I love that bit of continuity. There's a lot of background between Darkness's noble status, the impending attacks from the Demon Lord's forces, Kazuma's potential romantic relationship with Megumi and now this mysterious thief. There are so many possibilities and I can't wait to see what they have to offer.
