The voice actor makes interesting points about the ethical use of creative AI
In an effort to prevent the unauthorized use of voices in generated AI, on October 15, several Japanese voice actors announced that they had formed the group No More Mudan Saisei AI (No More Creative AI). illegally created). Following a short preview video featuring Ryūsei Nakao, the team launched a series of videos with voice actors giving their thoughts on the use of AI on October 21.

The nearly six-minute video features voice actors Kōichi Yamadera, Chika Sakamoto, Mika Kanai, Toshihiko Seki, Kujira, and Ryūsei Nakao discussing their thoughts on AI voice replication. Each voice actor expressed their concerns about the technology. Seki and Kujira note issues surrounding the lack of legal copyright protection for their respective voices and how their voices are their “product.”
However, both Yamadera and Nakao make interesting arguments about the ethical use of technology. Yamadera said he sees the technology as something people and fans can enjoy privately. But he also notes that problems arise when people try to commercialize the works they create or post them widely online such as on social media.
On the other hand, Nakao recounted how a voice actor friend of his went missing. His or her voice and their last lines are generated using AI. While Nakao thinks this is great, he also imparts to viewers the wisdom of Anpanman creator Takashi Yanase (rough translation), “Show children the truth.”

It seems like the six voice actors in the latest AI No More Mudan Saisei video have mixed feelings about the use of synthetic AI voice technology. While they recognize the exciting potential of creative AI, they also understand that its commercial use could devalue their products. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, very little has been done to protect voice actors and their craft.
