The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has announced that “KICK BACK” by Kenshi Yonezu is now certified Gold, meaning it has accumulated the equivalent 500,000 sales only in the United States. This award marks the only time in history that a Japanese song has been recognized as Gold Certified by the RIAA.
“KICK BACK” by Kenshi Yonezu is certified Gold
Yonezu’s “KICK BACK” was an instant success in Japan and abroad after its debut as the opening song of Chainsaw Man. “KICK BACK” earned 14 million views on YouTube in less than 2 days after release, is the most streamed opening anime of 2022 on Spotify, ranked sixth in the poll of TV Asahi Japan of the most popular anime songs of the Reiwa era (2019 – present) and is the most streamed Fall 2022 anisong song on Spotify by a large margin. Yonezu has been going from strength to strength since introducing himself to many overseas fans through the opening song of My Hero AcadeKaren, “Peace Sign”. Since then, he has produced the theme songs for Studio Ghibli’s FINAL FANTASY XVI and The Boy and the Heron.
The RIAA certification requirements for songs vary based on the number of times the song is downloaded, streamed, or permanently purchased in the United States—known as conforming sales. According to the RIAA, permanently purchasing a song digitally or physically is equivalent to 150 streams through legal streaming providers. The song must reflect fair value to the record label, so free downloads do not count toward certification.
Yonezu debuted as Vocaloid music artist “Hachi” in 2009 before beginning to release music under his real name in 2012. RIAA Gold certification for “KICK BACK” joins over a dozen certifications another certification from the Japanese certification association RIAJ. Along with Chainsaw Man and My Hero AcadeKaren, Yonezu has shown his talent in animated series such as March Comes In Like a Lion and the films Fireworks (Uchiage Hanabi) and Children of the Sea.
