The film opens in Japan on July 19.
The film has the participation of voice actors:
Mutsuo Yoshioka and Shōhei Uno also contribute vocals.
The cast also played the characters in shots that served as reference for animating the characters, with their dialogue during their motion capture also used in the film.
Yōko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita directed the film and Shinji Imaoka wrote the script. The film is 90 minutes long and uses mixed animation techniques combining 2D digital animation with rotoscopy. Yōko Kuno is the character designer, Julien De Man is the art director and color artist, Namiko Ishidate and Yukie Nakauchi are the animation directors, and Keiichi Suzuki is composing the music.
Chiaki Satō (ASAB) performed the theme song “Matatabi”.
The film will be shown in progress at the Annecy Animation Festival in June 2023. Paris-based CHARADES will handle international sales. GKIDS has acquired North American film rights.
Miyu Productions describes the film's story:
Karin, 11 years old, is abandoned by her father at the house of her grandfather, a monk in a small town in rural Japan. Her grandfather asks Anzu, a cheerful and helpful though erratic ghost cat, to take care of her. The meeting of their powerful characters causes sparks, at least at the beginning…
Kodansha published the one-volume Bakeneko Anzu-chan manga in 2007.
