Review Kaiju No 8 Episode 5: A new sci-fi, action-animated movie is out and we're really excited about it. Let's see how the third episode of this brand new series plays out.
Overview of Kaiju issue 8
Kaiju No. 8 stands out as a notable manga character by talented artist Matsumoto Naoya. Taking on the role of adapting the anime are directors Miya Shigeyuki and Kamiya Tomomi, while the task of writing the script and composing the series falls to the talented hands of Ookouchi Ichirou. Gou Fumiyuki, known for works such as Blue Lock, Mieruko-chan, and Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo, serves as music director. Bringing the images to life is Production IG, famous for its work on series such as Haikyuu!! and Kuroko no Basket.
In terms of songs, the opening theme “Abyss” performed by YUNGBLUD, adds a special energy to the series. Meanwhile, the ending theme “Nobody” comes from OneRepublic, perfectly complementing the anime.
Volume 5 of Kaiju No. 8 can also be called volume 5 of Kaijuu 8-gou (怪獣8号).
I've tried my best to keep the review as spoiler-free as possible, but there are certain elements that I have to cover in order to give a proper response.

Kaiju No 8 Episode 5 Review: A Necessary Breakthrough
The results are in, and to everyone's shock, Kafka Hibino passed his exam even when everyone, including us, thought he wouldn't pass. Not only him but even Reno passed with excellent marks and now both of them can join the army after the training. The final result of the competition was not surprising as Kikoru came in first place. Although she accepts her position and award, she still hates that she did not earn her position. Kikoru knows that Kafka should be in her place, but she reveals nothing to make things better.
The reason Kafka was chosen even though he performed below average on the test was because of the Vice Captain, Hoshina. He thought Kafka did a great job analyzing the weaknesses of all the kaiju and assisting the team. Additionally, he found Kafka's antics funny so this also greatly influenced his decision.
Today's episode was a much-needed breather after all the fighting and competition. Here, we see Kafka make new friends and comrades who will fight alongside him. He blended in with them properly and they supported him as well. Kafka, here, appears as a lovable older brother, acting like a child full of superficial wisdom. He cares for his teammates like a guardian, toying with them but also willing to go to great lengths to protect them.
At the end, we see a Kaiju has attacked and Kafka will have to go on his first mission at midnight. So we can expect a lot from the next episode. Another important point here is that Hoshina was not as lucky as he portrayed because he was the only one who actually felt Kafka's strange presence. Let's just hope that even if Hoshina finds out about Kafka, he won't turn him in for experiments.
Verdict
I liked this episode and it was peaceful amidst Kafka's humorous stunts. He keeps you entertained with his jokes and incompetence with everyone else throughout the episode, while still working harder than anyone. It's great that he is aware of his shortcomings but still has the heart and will to do better.
