'For me, Yamato is a work in which many worlds exist simultaneously'
Hideaki Anno, co-creator and director of Neon Genesis Evangelion, announced on October 5 that he and his Khara studio will be working on a new Space Battleship Yamato anime project. Anno said he could not yet reveal details about the project but emphasized that it follows a different path from the remake projects being developed by the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 anime.
On October 14, the director explained in more detail in a public announcement on Khara's website and X account (formerly Twitter). He was thinking about the entire Yamato franchise and how he planned to approach his project.

Anno noted that when Space Battleship Yamato began in the 1970s, the series' story went in different directions with the sequels Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato and Space Battleship Yamato 2. translation): “For me, Yamato is a work in which many worlds exist simultaneously.” The director later likened the Yamato franchise to Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and even anime adaptations of manga series in that the previous seasons are often reset or the stories run parallel to each other and the later seasons are different. each other, take the same story.
Anno also clarified: “For me, the existence of many overlapping works with the same name has been a natural part of my life since I was a child.” So it seems like the idea of two concurrent Yamato projects is something he's used to. Adding, “I would like to reiterate my prayers for the safe journey and safe return of the ongoing remake series [Yamato yo Towa ni: Rebel 3199 (Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199)].”Anno shows no ill will or resentment towards 3199. In fact, he wants it to succeed and add to Yamato's legacy (Yutaka Izubuchi, project director for the 2199 remake, is also working on new project of Anno and Khara.)
With that. Following these comments, the director also said he is trying to make his new Yamato project one that continues the franchise's legacy until its 100th anniversary.
Anno and Khara's project staff aim to begin production in 2025 for a later theatrical release.
