The series went on hiatus in July 2022
Yuzuru Shimazaki's Ginga Tetsudo 999 Another Story: Ultimate Journey (Galaxy Express 999 Another Story: Ultimate Journey) manga resumed publication after two years in Akita Publishing's Champion magazine in the December issue of RED Magazine on Saturday. The manga retells the story of Leiji Matsumoto's original Galaxy Express 999 manga. The anime and manga story follows an orphan boy named Tetsuro as he travels with a mysterious woman named Maetel across the galaxy on a spaceship in hopes of acquiring a cybernetic body. The ship stops at many planets along the way, often leading to adventures for both.
The series last published regular chapters in June 2022. The series went on hiatus in July of the same year due to Shimazaki's health problems.
Shimazaki launched the manga in Champion RED in March 2018. Matsumoto is credited as the original author, setting, and design for the manga, and Shimazaki is drawing the series. Matsumoto passed away in February 2023.
Akita Shoten published the manga's seventh compilation volume in September 2021.
Shimazaki previously drew a manga reboot of Matsumoto's Gun Frontier manga.
The 113-episode Galaxy Express 999 television anime series aired from 1978-1981. An alternate retelling of the anime premiered in 1979. The series has since spawned many other films, specials, and OVAs. The original 18-volume manga was released from 1977-1981.
