There are a lot of memorable things about the 2006 anime adaptation of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and on the list there has to be the first episode, “The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Volume 00.” Taking the form of an SOS Brigade cultural festival self-film, this exciting episode even features a bespoke in-universe opening song, “Koi no Mikuru Densetsu,” which was recently covered by Hololive VTuber Hakui Koyorinh>.
One of the strengths of “The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Volume 00” is that it really feels like an amateur production, with the character of Yuuko Gotou (as Mikuru) performance of the opening theme also reflects that. This cover has better production values than SOS Brigade’s version, but Hakui’s performance pays homage to the original by recreating the seductive feel of the amateur singer, so much so that the cover also started with a somewhat clumsy opening sentence.
