I'm happy to announce that this week's episode of Go, Go, Loser Ranger! is a step forward for this one, even if the weaker elements of this plot remain. Yes, the garage is still a very bland and confusing setting for such an action-heavy premise, and I still think the story focuses on too many new characters at once. However, improved production values, along with the inclusion of some realistic drama, have made”Battle! Fever! Fighter D!”a much more entertaining episode than its predecessors.
However, to address my main complaint of the week, I have to say that I wish that G!G!LR! didn't try to introduce dozens of new characters with such a chaotic tournament-style training story. I understand that, on paper, it makes sense to throw all these new actors into the mix at the same frenzied pace as Warrior D has to meet them, but the execution is too much. In this episode alone, we get four flashbacks featuring different characters of varying length and impact, all meant to convey different things in different tones, and that's in the midst of an air war. Pause between all students. It doesn't help that today's action in the parking lot is too poorly hampered to be as effective as it could be. There's no real sense of where the different pairs of characters are or how much time passes during/between each of the various fight sequences, which results in a chaotic but also quite boring scene of random scenes. Of course it doesn't make us love it. a lot for any new student.
Luckily, the episode takes a turn for the worse as it narrows the focus to the fight between Fighter D, Fighter XX (disguised as Renmaru), Kai, and Blue Keeper. It's refreshing to focus on a specific spot in this garage for once and get a much greater sense of danger, which the Blue Keeper is taking great joy in trying to torture and kill XX. Up until now, all of the Cadet Games content has seemed so removed from the mortal threat of Peltrola's attack on the compound that it's hard to get invested in the “Who Will Accept” part? accepted as an official Forest Ranger”. ???” aspect of the plot. The appearance of the Blue Keeper brings those two halves of the arc together and gives Fighter D something more interesting than fighting over a bunch of little keys from people, which I'm very interested in.
Additionally, further development of Aizome, Blue Keeper, and XX will bring back some of the great world-building we missed out on while stuck in the abyss of the garage. As obviously corrupt and dangerous as the Keepers have proven themselves to be, Peltrola and XX remind us that the monsters and bastards we have root for on behalf of Fighter D are still villains. The world of G!G!LR is even more complicated and messy! The more exciting it becomes, the more exciting Fighter D's journey will be. You won't catch me complaining about that.
